Writing-Enriched Curriculum

Process

At the center of the WEC process are multiple faculty dialogues that will allow departmental faculty groups to think collaboratively with specialists in writing pedagogy and assessment about the effective integration of writing into their undergraduate curricula.

Step #1: WEC team surveys faculty members, undergraduate students and professional affiliates on writing values, writing assignments, and concern areas. Samples of student writing are collected. The team compiles survey responses and creates brief but comprehensive history of the department’s involvement in the University’s Writing-Intensive initiative.

Step #2: Faculty meet in a series of working meetings to review results from all three surveys, to articulate writing characteristics and writing abilities they hope to foster in undergraduates, and to plan for writing assessment and instructional support.

Step #3: Departmental WEC Liaison drafts Writing Plan in collaboration with WEC Team.

Step #4: Drafts of the Writing Plan are circulated and revised before being ultimately submitted to the faculty-run Campus Writing Board for approval.

Step #5: The WEC team compiles findings into a Final Report which is presented to the department.

Step #6: Faculty and instructors, in collaboration with WEC team, implement and assess their Writing Plan.

Step #7: Writing plan is adjusted as necessary and continues to be implemented.
