WEC Units: Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical Engineering, enrolling roughly 500 undergraduates in its major and offering courses taught by roughly 45 faculty members, is among the largest of the twelve departments belonging to the Institute of Technology.

Writing Plan

Highlights:
Creation Phase (Spring 2007)
ME faculty members suggested that the most ubiquitous form of writing assigned in the undergraduate curriculum may be the problem set, and that successful problem sets, like successful writing in the field, are transparent to the solver’s sequential logic. As an ME Teaching Assistant noted, “This will surprise most students. They think that the emphasis is on the solution, not how they found the solution.”

Implementation Phase (Fall 2007–Spring 2008)
ME faculty and members of the WEC Team focused on the assignments and assessment instruments used in specific courses. The department also hired a summer-term Research Assistant to create a series of ME writing style guides to be used by all undergraduate students at each level.
